ThrombosisClinic.com Supports Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent Venous Thromboembolism
Advisory Board Member Dr Samuel Goldhaber Plays Key Role in Developing "Call to Action" to Prevent Venous Thromboembolism
BRIDGEWATER, NJ, November 05, 2008 /New Jersey News Articles/ -- On September 15, 2008, Acting Surgeon General Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson, MD, MPH, issued "The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism" addressing the serious but often silent condition of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and its most serious complication, pulmonary embolism (PE). The "Call to Action" can be found online at http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/topics/deepvein/calltoacti ... and urges all Americans to become familiar with the risk factors and triggers for the development of DVT. Its intent is threefold:
• Increase awareness among consumers, healthcare providers, and healthcare administrators about the risk factors, triggers, and symptoms of DVT and PE
• Develop evidence-based practices for screening, preventing, diagnosing, and treating DVT and PE, especially among high-risk groups, and ensure that medical professionals adhere to these practices
• Continue research on the causes of DVT and PE to understand why certain groups are at increased risk and to develop treatment and prevention strategies
Samuel Z. Goldhaber, MD, Co-editor of the Surgeon General's "Call to Action" and advisory board member of http://www.ThrombosisClinic.com, said:
"The Surgeon General's 'Call to Action to Prevent DVT and PE' is as historic in 2008 as the Surgeon General's report in the 1960s that pointed out the danger of cigarette smoking to the American public. Not enough Americans are aware of how DVT and PE cause the loss of more than 100,000 lives per year and contribute to disability and poor quality of life to many additional hundreds of thousands annually. Fortunately, many DVT and PE cases can be prevented with adequate education of healthcare professionals. The Surgeon General's 'Call to Action' will serve as a reminder to physicians, nurses, and pharmacists that DVT and PE require constant vigilance to employ established and safe preventive measures and to consider the diagnosis when evaluating patients."
ThrombosisClinic.com fully supports the Surgeon General's efforts and underscores the importance of increasing the knowledge base of physicians through evidence-based continuing medical education that enables them to make fully informed decisions regarding diagnosis, treatment, and prevention options.
